After hours of "fun"... I tried removing the doc type declaration at the
top of the file
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
"DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
and behold, the spaces showing up in Netscape and Opera went away. Maybe I
am misunderstanding the doctype thing, or maybe there are some bugs in
implementation? If anyone is a whiz with doctypes I wouldn't mind a quick
pointer or two. May be that I should be setting it for HTML transitional
instead of XHTML? I'm going to go browse the W3C pages a bit and see if I
can figure this out. Talk about the headache. <sigh>
